          Common Abortion FAQs
Did You Know?
-
About 1 in 4 pregnancies ends in miscarriage, so a positive test may not mean an abortion is needed. An ultrasound is the standard way to confirm a viable pregnancy. Charis Clinic provides no-cost viability ultrasounds. A nurse will determine eligibility.
-
The FDA approves the abortion pill through 10 weeks of pregnancy. Accurate dating with ultrasound confirms how far along you are and whether the abortion pill is an option.
-
Using only your last period date can be inaccurate and may increase the chance of an incomplete abortion. A viability ultrasound with trained medical staff gives the clearest and most reliable dating of your pregnancy
-

Many women who choose abortion say they felt pressure from others. But the decision is yours alone. No one—not a partner, spouse, parent, or anyone else—has the legal right to force or threaten you into a medical or surgical abortion. If you feel pressured or unsupported in the thought of parenting or adoption, Charis Pregnancy Clinic can connect you with a client advocate who will listen, explain your legal rights, and help you explore your options.

If you’re thinking about abortion, your first step is a pre-abortion assessment, which may include an ultrasound. An ultrasound can show: -
If your pregnancy is developing. This matters because the stage of pregnancy and your health history affect which abortion methods are available.
-
If your pregnancy is viable. The only way to know for sure if a pregnancy is progressing is with ultrasound. About 1 in 4 pregnancies do not continue, and some women don’t learn they’ve miscarried until it’s seen on an ultrasound. If that happens, follow-up medical care will be needed.
All ultrasounds at Charis Clinic are provided at no cost, and a nurse will determine your eligibility at your appointment.

The cost of an abortion depends on the procedure and whether the abortion pill is still an option for your stage of pregnancy. Prices can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars. Before deciding, it’s important to know how far along you are. At Charis Pregnancy Clinic, a nurse can verify your pregnancy stage with an ultrasound. While we don’t perform or refer for abortions, we do provide no-cost ultrasounds as part of a pre-abortion assessment.

Charis Pregnancy Clinic provides no-cost ultrasounds to confirm if a pregnancy is viable and to check how far it has developed. As a community-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Charis does not profit from your ultrasound or your pregnancy decision. Another benefit of having your ultrasound here is that, since there’s no charge, nothing is billed to insurance or added to your account. All ultrasound information is completely confidential. You’ll meet with staff who advocate for you and give you a safe place to review your options. You can request a confidential appointment online or call us. If you reach out after hours, a staff member will respond the next business day. If you are experiencing bleeding, spotting, or cramping, please seek medical care right away. These can be signs of miscarriage (spontaneous abortion) and may need treatment from a doctor.
