Is The Abortion Pill Legal In Utah?

If you’re thinking about abortion, getting clear and correct info matters. In this post, we explain what you should know about the abortion pill, especially in Utah. Need immediate answers? Chat with a nurse for free at (385) 483-3227 via text or call.

When Can I Use the Abortion Pill?

A medical abortion—often called the abortion pill—is FDA-approved for use up to 70 days (10 weeks) after the first missed period. After that, its effectiveness decreases significantly.

To know exactly how far along you are, it’s best to get an ultrasound. That gives a more precise idea of when conception likely occurred.

What Kinds of Abortion Pills Are Available to Me?

Usually, abortion pills fall into two groups:

  • FDA‐approved medicines: These are approved in the U.S., follow strict quality standards, and are generally more expensive.

  • Non-FDA approved options: These may come from other countries, sometimes with less strict oversight. Shipping may take longer. They may be more affordable, but quality, safety, and legality can vary.

It’s very important to be cautious with non-FDA approved sources—risks are higher when safety and oversight are less certain.

Can I Use the Abortion Pill in Utah?

Yes. As of now, abortion (including medical abortion using abortion pills) is legal in Utah up to 18 weeks of pregnancy.

Here’s how that came about:

  • Utah passed a “trigger law” in 2020 meant to ban nearly all abortions under most circumstances if Roe v. Wade were overturned.

  • After Roe was overturned in 2022, that ban was supposed to take effect. But courts have temporarily blocked its enforcement.

  • In the meantime, the law that is in force limits abortion access in Utah to up to 18 weeks of gestation.

So, currently in Utah, you can legally use the abortion pill if you’re within that 18-week window, though earlier is better for safety and effectiveness.

At-Home Abortions & The Abortion Pill

If you get abortion pills, using them correctly is very important. Without professional guidance, there are risks such as:

  • incorrect dosage or timing

  • incomplete abortion, which might require medical follow-up or surgery

  • heavier bleeding than expected

  • emotional impact—seeing the process of the pregnancy ending, which can be hard

Becoming emotionally ready is just as important as knowing the medical facts. Many people find it helpful to have a counselor or trusted person to talk with before, during, and after.
